How we do it

Give tired lawns a second life without replacing the whole thing.

Canberra lawns take a real beating. Hot dry summers thin them out and stress them. Frosts in winter bruise the grass. Heavy traffic compacts the soil. After a few years you end up with patchy, uneven, thin lawn that looks tired and doesn't do much. Most people think they need to rip it all out and start again. Usually they don't.

Top dressing is one of the most effective ways to fix a tired lawn without full replacement. You spread a thin layer of quality soil and sand mix over the lawn. It levels out bumps and hollows, fills the low spots where water pools, and sits on top of the old soil, giving grass something to root into. Add overseeding — fresh seed pushed into the top dressing — and you get real green-up over the next few weeks. In Canberra, doing this in autumn gives you the best results because the soil's warm and moisture is good.

If the soil is compacted and hard, aeration (coring) opens things up so air and water get down to the roots. If there's a thick layer of dead grass and debris (thatch) on top of the soil, dethatching clears that out so the new growth has room. We assess your lawn, work out what's actually holding it back, and put together a plan. Usually it's top dressing and overseeding. Sometimes we add aeration or dethatching. We handle all of it.

Improving lawn health naturally means less need for chemical fertilisers and herbicides. A healthy, dense lawn outcompetes weeds on its own. And you keep the carbon footprint low by not replacing the whole lawn — just reviving what you've got.

FAQs

Common questions about lawn repairs in Canberra.

What is top dressing and does my lawn need it?

Top dressing is a thin layer of quality soil and sand mix spread over your lawn. It levels out bumps and hollows, fills low spots where water pools, and improves the soil layer. If your lawn is uneven, has thin patches, or the soil's compacted and hard, top dressing will help. Kai will assess your lawn and let you know if it's the right move for your situation.

When is the best time to overseed a lawn in Canberra?

Autumn (March to May) is ideal for overseeding in Canberra. The soil is warm, moisture is good, and seed has time to establish through to spring. A good combo is top dressing with overseeding in autumn — the thin soil layer gives seeds something to root into, and you get real results. Spring is also okay, but autumn gives you the best shot.

How do I fix bare patches in my lawn?

Bare patches usually come from heavy traffic, poorly draining areas where water sits, or thin soil. For small patches, direct seeding into prepared soil often works. For bigger areas or persistent problems, we assess what's causing the bare patch. Sometimes it's drainage, sometimes soil, sometimes the area needs dethatching first. We'll work out the right fix and get those patches growing again.

How long does it take for a repaired lawn to recover?

Top dressing and overseeding takes about 4-8 weeks to really show improvement depending on season and weather. You'll see green-up over 2-3 weeks if conditions are good. Dethatching and aeration see results within weeks as the grass responds to better soil contact and air. The full recovery to a dense, healthy lawn usually takes 8-12 weeks. Keep up with regular mowing and watering and you'll maintain that improvement.
