How we do it

New lawn that establishes properly and lasts.

A good turf installation isn't just about laying rolls of grass down. It's about preparation, the right variety for your situation, and aftercare that lets the grass establish deep roots. That's the difference between a lawn that looks good for a season and one that actually lasts.

The process starts with assessing what you've got. If there's an old lawn or weeds, we remove them. We level and grade the ground so water doesn't pool in low spots. We work organic matter and starter fertiliser into the soil to give new turf the best chance. Then we lay fresh turf tightly, staggered like brickwork, roll it so it's in good contact with the soil, and water it thoroughly. We give you the aftercare steps so the grass establishes properly over the next weeks.

We source turf from local Canberra growers who breed varieties for this climate. Canberra Blend is our most popular — it's tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass mixed, which handles our sun and shade and our hot-cold seasonal swings. Santa Ana couch is brilliant for full sun and is very drought-tolerant. Buffalo if you've got shaded areas. The best time to lay is autumn (March to May) when the soil is warm and the turf can establish through to spring. Spring is good too. Winter is possible but slower. Summer needs serious watering.

Because we lay locally sourced turf and prepare the ground properly, you're reducing transport emissions and you've got a well-established lawn from day one. A quality lawn outcompetes weeds on its own, which means less weeding later and less need for chemical control.

FAQs

Common questions about turf laying in Canberra.

What's the best turf for Canberra?

Canberra Blend (tall fescue and Kentucky bluegrass) is our most popular choice — it's the all-rounder that handles sun and some shade, hot summers and cold winters. Santa Ana couch is excellent for full sun areas and is very drought-tolerant. Buffalo is the way to go if you've got shady areas. Kai will recommend the right variety based on your property's sun exposure and what you want from your lawn.

When is the best time to lay turf in Canberra?

Autumn (March to May) is ideal because the soil is warm and turf has good conditions to establish roots over the cooler months. Spring is also good. You can lay turf in winter but establishment is slower and you'll need to be careful with watering. Summer is possible but needs intensive watering to keep the turf alive. We'll advise on the best timing for your situation.

How long before I can walk on new turf?

You can walk on new turf lightly after about 2-3 weeks if it's been watered regularly and the roots are establishing. But it's best to stay off it for the first month to let it get a really solid hold. After 6-8 weeks in good conditions, the turf is fully established and you can use it normally — mow, play, whatever you like.

How much does it cost to lay turf in Canberra?

Turf laying costs depend on the area, ground conditions, and turf variety you choose. The biggest variable is site preparation — how much old lawn or weeds need removing, whether the soil needs improving, and how uneven the ground is.
